Newsom: If Chronicle vanished, under-30s ‘won’t notice’

The Economist, Britain’s gift to journalism and a success in the U.S., has more bad news for the shrinking San Francisco Chronicle, saying in a May 14 article it “stands a fair chance of becoming the first major American city without a daily newspaper.”

The British news weekly noted in a story on “The rebirth of news” and attempts to revitalize journalism using new technologies and formats, that the Hearst Corp.-owned Chronicle “is trimming its already pared-down staff in an attempt to avoid closure.” And adding insult to injury, if it were to close, the newspaper said, quoting San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, “People under 30 won’t even notice.”  MORE
