If you are listening to the radio, reading a regional paper or surfing the west coast blogs, you are hearing how dark the days ahead are going to be in Sacramento subsequent the special election on Tuesday.
You will hear proponents of the propositions explain how we have no choice but to “swallow hard” and vote yes to save our schools and emergency services. You will hear opponents decry tax hikes of any kind, education be damned.
Meanwhile, the governor is rolling out a last minute pr campaign with apocalyptic images and promises to get it right next time. Every candidate to replace him, democrat and republican alike has a unique position on 1A thru 1F. Their confusion is a mirror reflection of the voters. Yes it is 2009, and here we go again.
All of this nonsense is rooted in Ronald Reagan’s anti-government, anti-education amendment, Prop 13. Celebrated as the dawn of the conservative revolution by right wing “thinkers”, article 13A has corrupted and broken Sacramento from the day it was enacted. The 2/3 rule within the amendment is undemocratic and provides the minority a stranglehold on the state’s purse. It is a stratagem of an ongoing anti-tax movement to bankrupt our state government into oblivion.
Many claim the 2/3 rule is a firewall that protects tax payers from run away spending. In truth, it is the straw that Daniel Plainview speaks of, sucking the upward mobility of ordinary middle class citizens. Whatever the outcome of this election, come Wednesday, we got work to do.
Daniel Plainview – There Will Be Blood
Drainage! Drainage, Eli! Drained dry, you boy!
If you have a milkshake and I have a milkshake
and I have a straw
and my straw reaches across the room
and starts to drink your milkshake.
I drink your milkshake!
I drink it up!
