05/08/09 – Mayor Gavin Newsom met yesterday with a Senior Advisor to President Obama and several Cabinet secretaries. They discussed healthcare, the environment, poverty, and transportation.
Mayor Newsom first met with Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett and they discussed Healthy San Francisco, Treasure Island, economic recovery, and the meeting concluded with Jarrett leading Mayor Newsom on a tour of the White House Victory Garden. In July 2008, Mayor Newsom and Slow Food Nation made San Francisco the first city in the nation to reintroduce the Victory Garden concept by planting an edible, organic garden in the middle of San Francisco’s Civic Center. Since then, California First Lady Maria Shriver and First Lady Michelle Obama have decided to establish Victory Gardens in Sacramento at the Capitol and at the White House.
After, Mayor Newsom traveled to the Department of Labor and met with Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis. They discussed Healthy San Francisco, Bank on San Francisco and financial literacy, and their meeting concluded with a brief tour of the Department of Labor, which is currently greening its roof.
Mayor Newsom then traveled to the Department of Transportation and met with Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood. They discussed Doyle Drive, Third Street, and the planned Transbay Terminal. Secretary LaHood expressed interest in visiting San Francisco later this year to tour the City’s transportation initiatives.
Last, Mayor Newsom met with Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Sean Donovan. They discussed HOPE SF, Communities of Opportunity, and San Francisco’s comprehensive plans to solve homelessness with supportive housing. They concluded their meeting by discussing Project Homeless Connect and Donovan expressed interest in using the program as a best practice for national service as part of the recently signed Service Act.
